Dr. Maria Vargas-Vera from The Open University (UK) was appointed a visiting scholar in Poznan University of Economics. The contract starts on September 1, and will last three months. She will work on temporal context of information, its representation and extraction from documents (WP10). Moreover, she will held a series of lectures on ontology applications for students and faculty members.


Monitoring of FP6 TOK Contracts in Poland

Dr. K. Węcel attended an informal mid-term review meeting in Poland that took place in Warsaw. The idea was to meet all contractors and Fellows funded under the FP6 TOK scheme in small groups in order to allow individual reviews and assessment of the effectiveness of the TOK programme in Poland. The visiting group to Poland consisted of two Project Officers and two Project Technical Assistants (PTAs).

Dr. Peter Plessers from Vrije Universiteit Brussels (Belgium) was appointed a visiting scholar in Poznan University of Economics. The contract lasts four months. He will work on ontology evolution based on his recently defended PhD theses: "An Approach to Web-Based Ontology Evolution". He will work on the upper layer of ontology evolution while local team members will provide evidences for evolution extracted from the text (as based on the work of WP2). Dr. Plessers will prepare a plug-in for Eclipse.

Dr. Jakub Piskorski from European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC), Web and Language Technology - IPSC started his second part of the contract. He continued the work with two PhD students on application of natural language processing tools this tool in order to improve the disambiguaiton of the entities extracted from business news.

Dr. Bo-Yeong Kang from Seoul National University (Korea) was appointed a visiting scholar in The Poznan University of Economics. The contract lasts three months. Her main topic is information retrieval. She will be working together with a Black Ocean team on ontology evolution and how it affects the decision making process.

Dr. Krzysztof Węcel has been appointed a visiting scholar at the University of Karlsruhe in Forschungszentrum Informatik (FZI), Germany. The fellowship is scheduled for five months. He will be working together with Information Process Engineering department on foundations and applications of the ontologies for information filtering, processing and retrieval. The focus is on KAON and other tools developed by a team in Karlsruhe.

The Poznan University of Economics is now hosting Dr. Jakub Piskorski from German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI). His stay started on June 19, 2005 and will last one month (first part). He will introduce into the Department the tool for Shallow Text Processing - SProUT (WP2). He will closely work with two PhD students on application of this tool in order to semi-automatically extend the ontology, and thus increase the precision of information retrieval.

Prof. Witold Abramowicz has been appointed a visiting scholar at the University of Innsbruck in Digital Enterprise Research Institute (DERI Innsbruck). The fellowship is scheduled for two months. He will be working on Web Services.

The Poznan University of Economics is now hosting Prof. Maria Orlowska from the Queensland University, Brisbane, Australia. Her stay started on March 1, 2005 and is scheduled for three months. She will share with us her knowledge on Formal models of ontologies (WP1) through discussions with PhD students and within different working groups and departmental projects. We have also fixed plans for several seminars on methodologies.

The Poznan University of Economics hosted a researcher from the University of Queensland, Australia. The main goal of the visit was to find further directions of research for each project of MIS Department. The guest evaluated every project thoroughly.

The official date of the start of the project is October 1, 2004. enIRaF is just another EU project that will be run by Department of Management Information Systems. Candidates are invited to apply for the vacancies. The project will run for 4 years and will finish on September 30, 2008.

The Poznan University of Economics has hosted a researcher from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. The aim of the visit was to present the current projects of MIS Department and to find common research areas. The guest presented his research activities, and some EU-funded project he is involved in. He also held a mini-workshop on ontology modeling. For ontology modeling he used HARDY, a meta-CASE tool or generic diagramming tool with built-in programming language, developed at University of Edinburgh.

The Poznan University of Economics has hosted a Senior Software Engineer from German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI GmbH). The aim of the visit was to present the current projects of MIS Department and to find common research areas. The guest has presented SProUT, a platform for the development of multilingual shallow text processing systems. It was considered an interesting tool for enhancement of departmental projects.

The aim of the visit was to present the current projects of MIS Department and to find common research areas. The guest has presented his view on knowledge management and how he sees role of ontologies in information systems. His comments in discussions of projects were very valuable.
